This is one of the most interesting internship that we have in Sri Lanka. This internship is based on the town named Matara which is out of the Colombo city (capital) It is situated in down south coastal area of Sri Lanka. Matara is a place that easily reachable to the beautiful & well known beaches and as well as serene rural areas of Sri Lanka.
This internship is at community development organization which is organizing many community projects in the area. This internship is very much suitable for a EP who is interested in Social works, Political Sciences & Cultural Education. Though we've mentioned that this internship is to teach English (in fact the main objective is teaching English), it's not only about teaching English. Volunteer will be able to be part of the every project that they are organizing.
MINCO International College
MINCO international college is a private institute which has branches in Colombo & Kandy the volunteer can choose either one of them. In this internship volunteers need to work as English teachers for teen ages. This college runs residential English course for school leavers so EP will have to do lesson for those students as well. Free food & accommodation will be provided.
Ashoka Vidyalaya
Ashoka vidyalaya is one of leading government Boy’s school in Colombo. Interns suppose to work as an English teacher. And there will be two interns working in this project at same time. Food and accommodation will be provided in an AIESECers house. Please refer the TN form for the detail job description.
Success English College
Success English College is an private English institute which operate their lessons in the evening. School children come to this institute to get an extra help to develop their English skills. Intern will have to be there from 1 pm to 7 pm & conduct English lessons.
This institute is located in Piliyandala town which is not far from capital Colombo. Piliyandala is a developing down which haven’t lose the village atmosphere fully. AIESEC will arrange the accommodation.
Colombo Young English Foundation
This is also a private English institute which is well known. This institute has worked with our LC for more than 3 years and more than 10 AIESEC interns have worked there. This time they are going to recruit around 5 interns so it will be a great experience for the interns who will be recruited. Intern’s main job roll is delivering English lessons both theory and speaking. Interns will get free food and accommodation and also they will get a 100$ salary also.
This institute is located in Nugegoda and just one hour drive away from the capital Colombo.
Dehiowita Community Project
Dehiowita is a beautiful area which belongs to Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka. A bit rural area but just 2 and half hours drive away from Colombo the Commercial capital of the country. And this area is very famous for adventure sports among Sri Lankans. Famous Kithulgala also belongs to this area. We thought to start a project in this area in order to develop the community & enhance the English & IT knowledge of students while improving their soft skills and leadership skills. Proposed job description for the project
Proposed Job Description
1. Introduce IT to school children & give them the basic knowledge 1.1 For small children introduce parts of the computer & basic functions teach them basic applications like paint etc 1.2 For intermediate students introduce useful software like MS office, Photoshop & internet using 1.3 Tech little bit of programming if there are interested children to learn.
2. Conduct English lessons to Children They may not have a very good knowledge in English therefore use innovative ways to make them interested in English use games & activities when teaching
3. Develop soft skills Leadership skills of children encourage them to deliver public speeches. If possible encourage them to do English Dramas sing poems in front of class.
4. Support the local community if a social service event happens around when intern is involving in the project.
5. Facilitate the workshops organized by the Zonal Education office if needed There may be some events organized by zonal education office to group of teachers or group of students from different schools in the area if such a event workshops happens in the period of internship intern will have to facilitate / deliver sessions regarding English & soft skills
Joint Project with LEO
In total, more than 150,000 young people in 139 countries are proud to serve others in their local communities and to call themselves Leos. These young community leaders are friendly, active and dedicated to creating new and exciting youth volunteer opportunities by participating in their local Leo clubs. Social and professional connections are an additional benefit for its members. Leo clubs provide youth volunteer opportunities – and are also a place to grow and have fun.
In Sri Lanka also LEO clubs are very active in social works. Therefore our local committee joined hands with bunch of active LEO clubs to make a better positive impact to the society. As an exchange participant you also have the opportunity to join with these projects. The interns who come to this project will work fulltime as an English teacher or IT teacher for little kids or as a facilitator in children orphanage intern can choose in which roll they like to take part or work in few weeks in one & switch to another. And when the partner LEO clubs organizing events interns can join with them & work on it. Mostly those events will be social service events.
Proposed Job Description
1. English Teaching – This will be the main project that EP will be involved. Teaching English to orphan children in Pamunugama children’s orphanage. Organize & do a Art completion for the children. Facilitate extracurricular activities to the children with the help of other teachers.
2. Help with Blooming Life Project – This is an Education tour organized by LEO Club the children will take to Kandy which is the last capital of the ancient kings' era of Sri Lanka. EP will have to help the teachers to guide the children throughout this tour.
3. Facilitate in the Leadership program- There will be leadership program for youth done by the LEO club which will be organized as one day or two day workshops. EPs can support the organizers and also deliver some sessions as a facilitator.
4. Help with the project ‘Care’ - This will be a one day project organized by LEO club in order to provide the needs for children who were born in Walikada Prison. EP can take part in this project & help LEO.
5. Drug Addiction Prevention Program – This is a one day event organized by LEO in order to educate the society about the effects of drugs. This will take part once or more when the EP is working with the LEO. EP can help the organizers & also deliver a session if it is possible.
6. Take part in AIESEC local committee programs such as welcome parties, global village and etc.
